QAR, perched on edge of donut this morning, standing against incubator door at time of tx. NOLO. Changed towels and placed perch in inc. Flew out of kennel - landed on shelf then flew across room toward door.

Surgery report
Procedure - Fracture repair - femur
Performed by - Dr. Ritzman
Surgery time - 55 minutes

Left Femoral Fracture Repair (Open Fracture): 
Patient was placed under general anesthesia and the left lateral
proximal pelvic limb was sterily prepared. 
At time of preparation it was noted there was large amount of
green bruising present as well as two open dermal wounds from
the initial trauma. The open dermal wounds had formed superficial
scabs. These wounds were caused from the bone ends piercing through
the skin at the time of the trauma. 
A longitudinal incision was made with #15 blade on the lateral
aspect of the left femur. Gentle blunt dissection used with moist
qtips to bluntly separate the overlying muscle bellies to reveal
the fracture site. 
The distal and proximal femoral fracture pieces were identified
and gently stablized. 
A 0.045 mm IM pin was placed at the fracture site and advanced
proximally out through the stifle joint. The IM pin distal end
 (blunted prior on distal end) was advanced into distal bone
fragment and the left femur was aligned. Two 0.035 mm cross pins
were placed from lateral to medial using hand chuck. One placed
in distal fragment and one placed in proximal fragment. Was not
able to place proximal cross pin at the very proximal end of
the femur due to the very tiny patient size so it was placed
a bit more distal but proximal to fracture site. 
Subcuticular and dermal closure with simple continuous pattern
with 5-0 Vicryl suture. 
IM pin and cross pins were gently bent into proper position parallel
to the femur. Thermoplastic cast material was used to form the
external fix bar. 

Post op radiograph was taken. Alignment of femur is very good,
proximal cross pin was advanced a bit further medially than ideal
but was left in this position as it was not possible to move
pin back out without losing purchase and alignment. Distal cross
pin has good placement. 

The two dermal openings original to the trauma were closed with
suture. 

Patient did well for the anesthesia period and recovery was smooth
and uneventful. 

Subcutaneous warmed fluids given to patient post op as well.


Will remain in hospital for overnight.

QAR, crouched in front corner of kennel. NOLO. Anaesthetized under 2.5% ISO and oxygen for rads, monitored closely due to quiet demeanor. Revealed L midshaft femur fx, closed and mobile. No other fx seen. Can see some green bruising around femur but feathers were difficult to part on most of it. Normal recovery from ISO but still very quiet. Admin buprenorphine and set up in donut in kennel.
Eval for/schedule surgery ASAP.
